Kinja'd!!!

In exactly one month from today I will restlessly lay awake in the middle of the night, pondering my future and washing out the looming anxiety attacks with episodes of Top Gear on Netflix, for the next day will be the day I move to Charlotte, NC.

I want to be completely up front with you, Oppo: The purpose of this post is to advertise myself to any of you with which it may concern - I am looking for a job.

My move to Charlotte come this August will be the first time I live away from my parents’ home and seek to live a life successfully on my own. While I will still be somewhat dependent on them as they help me through school, I will have my own place and pay my own bills, which is where you, the reader, may be able to assist me. Perhaps I will be able to assist you.

I would like you to employ me.

My name is Justin Westbrook, and as of August 1st of this year I will be 21, a resident of Charlotte, NC, attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and unemployed. If you live or work in or around the Charlotte area - knowing how massive it is, there’s a decent chance you do - and would be willing to offer a college student a position, I am interested.

To whom it may concern, I hold an Associates Degree of Arts that I obtained through an Early College program (where you take high school and community college courses in a cohesive and complimentary schedule) and will be attending UNCC to finish my Bachelors in Business with a focus on brand management and marketing. I have held a management position at Jimmy John’s Gourmet Subs, as well as an Assistant Manager position at Chick-Fil-A. I have experience working nearly two years for Starbucks Coffee Company as well. Some of these positions were held at the same time. I can confidently tell you I work in a professional manner, and I have always effortlessly been sociable with both my colleagues and customers. I have an excellent work ethic, and a drive for success and praise that is obvious through my work.

While I value my time and experience at my previous places of employment, they can not prepare for the future I hope to achieve during and after my years of studying. I am looking for an opportunity to gain the professional skills that will be expected and required from me in my future expeditions including experience in an office environment, deadline management, interpersonal skills with business coworkers and customers at a business or professional level, as well as advancing my current endeavors in writing and copy-editing.

Other notable achievements of mine include the ongoing James Bond blog project over at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , a blog in which I write research-based articles, news stories, as well as opinionated and periodical-like stories and articles. I also manage all of the content including pieces relevant to the community of James Bond, which I share from other Kinja-based blogs. I hope you have read one of my many articles already, as they are often shared over to the Jalopnik front page. Jalopnik, Gizmodo, and specifically Patrick George have been generous in sharing my voluntary work, and is now my measure of success with the blog.

I also manage an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! which has enjoyed steady growth from a welcoming community. I have experience in advertising my work on social media avenues including Facebook and Twitter as well. I encourage you to check out the blog, as I would be interested in, but I am not limiting myself to, being employed to do similar work.

I am looking for any work in the Charlotte area, but opportunities for me to gain experience in a position that requires copy-editing or producing would be of extreme interest for me. I can write with a voice as well as objectively depending of the needs of the story or the requirements provided.

If you are interested, please contact me at jwestbrookemail@gmail.com

From there I can provide any further information and I am completely open to questioning. Phone numbers, references and contacts, as well as a resume or other documentation will be quickly provided upon request.

If you, reader, have any other suggestions for avoiding the “quick-service” industry and finding a job suitable for balance with the schedule of a college student, please share it!

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to the future.

How do you feel about working in NASCAR? That’s the extent of my knowledge of Charlotte-area industry.

Haas F1 might be hiring as well.

I live in Mount Holly and work in Charlotte. I’ll keep an eye out for you but it’s not a bad idea to join LinkedIn if you haven’t already. Is there any industry you’d prefer?

There’s also Hendrick, which is a huge dealership network, as well as Solar motors which is also a dealer network. I know of NASCAR and a few smaller motorsport teams. The issue is they all use summer internships mostly for college level work.

Automotive or transportation. I would really appreciate anything you hear about. As I said above, I would love some office work, whether it is drafting memos or filing sticky notes, but really anything will do. I will of course be pursuing my own efforts, but this Oppo post is to hopefully find something comfortable and familiar.

Can’t point you to a job, but check out the South Park area. Might be able to work somewhere within South Park Mall or in the surrounding area (Phillips Place). Might be able to find a job in marketing. Or you could do sells. And believe me, the clientele at that mall are the kind you would want to have (i.e. rich people); and they will expect you to be professional. Not to mention you could potentially build a network with them if you take your job serious. You tend to see the same people at Dean & Deluca and Hermes for example. I wouldn’t hold out too much for a job that’s going to further your specific future career. That’s what internships are for. Can’t really think of any professional environment with part time people, save for a law office runner or receptionist. Pick one thing you think would be most advantageous to your future career plan that can be obtained through service work, and try do that.

Also check out some of the radio stations. A couple popular stations are based in Charlotte. John Boy and Billy for example are based there. There could be something there for the writting aspect.

Also, are you going to live in Charlotte proper, or are you doing that thing people from Charlotte do where they include anything within a 50 mile radius as Charlotte? I grew up in Rock Hill, just 30 minutes south in SC. Looking outside of Charlotte might be better since you’re going to have more family run business that have the ability to be more flexible.

While I don’t have a job to offer, I wouldn’t mind meeting up with you anytime I’m in Charlotte. I live in Columbia, SC which is an easy 75 miles south. Best of luck man!

I’ve had many experiences with Hendrick dealers. Just be careful. They don’t always have the most honest practices and I would hate to see you get involved with it.

I live just on the edge of University City in Charlotte proper. I have a friend who will be working with the DoT up there, so my primary objective is to try to get in there. There are a few freight and shipping companies close to home, so I may look into that. The next two weeks will be seeing what my options are, and then the second half of the month will be a full on hunt.

That’s been my avoidance of automotive sales in general so far. I backed out of a sales job at CarMax because of some reviews of the store I read.

I plan on being pretty active on the automotive meet front once I get settled, so I’m sure I’ll spots some Oppos around.

I mentioned it in my original comment, but look at law offices. You could be a runner. Check out Culp Elliot and Carpenter. I don’t know anyone there personally, so I can’t make any calls for you though (alas, I am but a lowly staff accountant so professional interactions for me are still rather few). I’m in Florence, SC now and we recommend a lot of our high net worth clients to them. I know one of my client law firms has a woman who is a runner for them and she is still in college, probably about your age. Gets to interact with a lot of people, in a professional environment.

Good call. I work at a local car dealer (small, family owned for 50 years now) and am impressed with how we handle our customers. No games or gimmicks. Just honesty. Feel free to reach out to me if you need anything. I spent a long time at UNCC and the surrounding area. Not too far from there now.
